Stingers Continue to Build 2010 Roster

(Willmar, MN) The Willmar Stingers are excited to announce four new signings to its 2010 inaugural season roster.  Signing contracts were Anthony Bemboom, Sean Dwyer, Daniel Zapata, and Cody Barnes. 

Anthony Bemboom is a Sauk Rapids, MN native who is currently playing at Iowa Western Community College.  Next season Bemboom will be playing at Creighton University.  Anthony is a sophomore catcher and outfielder.  For IWCC this season, Bemboom is hitting .408 with 45 RBI.  While at Sauk Rapids High School he was a 3-time all conference selection.

Sean Dwyer is going to be a freshman at Florida Gulf Coast University next year.  Sean is a switch hitting outfielder who is currently playing for Tavares High School in Florida.  Dwyer is batting .367 this spring with 3 doubles, 3 triples, and 3 home runs.  Dwyer is ranked #169 overall prospect in the country according to Prospectwire.com.  Sean was a 2010 Florida All Star participant and was named to the 2010 Perfect Game All Central Florida Team.

Daniel Zapata is a right-handed sophomore pitcher currently at Scottsdale Community College.  Next season, Zapata will be transferring to Dixie State College (Utah).  Zapata posted 2 saves, a 2-5 record, and 38 strikeouts in only 32.2 innings for the Fighting Artichokes.

Cody Barnes is a right-handed, sophomore pitcher currently at Daytona State College.  Barnes is going to be transferring next year to play at Florida Atlantic University.   This spring he has thrown 61.0 innings compiling 50 strikeouts.

The Home Opener, presented by Christianson & Associates, will feature Hall of Famer Paul Molitor, as the Stingers take on the St. Cloud River Bats on Thursday, June 3 at 7:05 p.m. at Bill Taunton Stadium. Single game tickets for this event and all 34-home games are currently on-sale at the ticket office location at the ballpark from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday or by calling 320-222-2010.

Stingers Add to Coaching Staff, Roster

(Willmar, MN) The Willmar Stingers have continued to build their roster for their 2010 inaugural season, adding three new players and two coaches.  Signing contracts were Mikey Reynolds, a freshman infielder at St. Mary’s College (California), Wally Marciel, a junior pitcher at Kansas, and Jacob Barnes, a sophomore pitcher at Florida Gulf Coast. 

Reynolds, a right-handed batting freshman, has 5 doubles, 2 triples, and a home run for the Gaels this season.  Before coming to St. Mary’s, Mikey helped lead his high school team to a district championship in 2009 hitting .512, 5 home runs, and stealing 21 bases that season. 

Marciel is a junior left-handed pitcher and who has made 24 appearances this season, pitching 32.2 innings.  Marciel is originally from Kailua, Hawaii and was named the 2006 Hawaii Gatorade Player of the Year. 

Barnes is a sophomore pitcher from Florida Gulf Coast University.  He has made 19 appearances, including two starts for the Eagles.  In 30 innings pitched, Barnes has struck out 26 batters.  In high school, he was a 2008 All-State Honorable Mention selection in Florida.

The Stingers have also filled out the remainder of their coaching staff.  Tyler Shepple and Jesse Rodgers will be joining Field Manager Matt Hollod in the dugout this summer.  Shepple received a scholarship to the University of Washington to play baseball and was drafted after his junior year by the Milwaukee Brewers.  Tyler played two seasons in the Brewers organization before suffering a career ending shoulder injury.  Rodgers is in his second season as the infield and hitting coach at Mt. Hood Community College in Oregon.  Prior to joining the staff at Mt. Hood CC, Rodgers was a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Portland in 2008 where he was also a player.

Border Cats Add Four

(Thunder Bay, Canada) The Thunder Bay Border Cats announced today the signing of four players for the 2010 season. Joining the two-time NWL Champions are second baseman
Evan Mistich, (Miss-titch), outfielder Jay Laurienzo, and pitchers Matt White and Freddy Lewis.

Mistich, a 6′0″, 190 pound sophomore at Panola Junior College in Carthage, TX, has played in 47 games for the Ponies this season and is batting .338. The Houma, LA native leads the team with 10 home runs and 46 runs batted in.

Laurienzo plays his collegiate ball in Fort Myers, FL at Florida Gulf Coast University. The 6′0, 190 pounder from Tampa, FL has played in only 9 games for the Eagles and is hitting .143 with one home runs and two RBI’s.

White is a junior at Rollins College in Orlando, FL, where he is a teammate of Border Cats pitcher Garrett Yount. The 6′4″, 235 pound lefthander has appeared in six games and has an 0-0 record with a 3.86 earned run average. White, from Bellingham, MA has made one start for Rollins this season.

Lewis is a 6′2″, 210 pound left-hander from Gainesville, FL. He is currently a junior at Tennessee Wesleyan College in Athens, TN. In 13 games for the Bulldogs this spring, Lewis is 2-4 with a 4.39 ERA.

The Border Cats open the 2010 Northwoods League season at Port Arthur Stadium on June 2, at 6:35 p.m. against the Duluth Huskies.
