MoonDogs Ink Pair of Infielders

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

(Mankato, MN) The Mankato MoonDogs announced today that they have signed a pair of infielders for the upcoming 2010 season. Sophomores Mike McQuillan (University of Iowa) and Chad Zurcher (University of Memphis) look to shore up the middle infield for the defending 2009 First Half North Division Champs.

Zurcher, a native of Knoxville, Tennessee, is in his third season at the University of Memphis. After starting 52 of a possible 53 games as the everyday shortstop for the Tigers as a true freshman in 2008, Zurcher was forced to redshirt in 2009 due to a shoulder injury.

“Chad is going to be a great addition to our team,” said Field Manager Mike Orchard. “He is a top of the order guy that will fit our mold at the shortstop position.”

So far in 2010, Zurcher has made the most of his redshirt sophomore campaign. Starting all 24 of the Tigers games so far this season, he currently leads the team with a .422 batting average. Zurcher also possesses tremendous speed, leading the Tigers with 13 stolen bases in 15 tries on the year.

McQuillan, who grew up in Evergreen Park, Illinois, made a strong contribution to the Hawkeyes as a freshman in 2009. He finished the year second on the team, and the leader amongst Iowa freshmen with a .363 batting average. McQuillan hit his stride as his freshman campaign progressed hitting a team-high .431 in Big Ten play.

“Mike is a hard worker. He will be the first person to the field and the last person to leave everyday,” Orchard said. “He is a versatile all around good player.”

Through 20 games in 2010, McQuillan has started all but one. He has posted a .279 average and he currently leads the Hawkeyes with two home runs and 15 runs batted in.

Eberle and Steranka

(Mankato, MN) The Mankato MoonDogs Baseball Club is proud to announce the signing of two infielders for the 2010 season. Sophomore Jordan Steranka of Penn State and sophomore Sam Eberle of Jacksonville State (Alabama) have committed to play for the MoonDogs this summer.

Steranka, a 6-foot-2, 210-pound sophomore, from Pittsburgh, Pa. plays third base for Penn State. He is currently third on the team in runs (8) and RBI (7). In 2009, Steranka led Penn State in average (.365), home runs (6) and RBI (42), and made just six errors in 49 games for the Nittany Lions. He was a third team All-Big Ten pick, and a member of the Big Ten All-Rookie team in 2009.

“Jordan had an excellent freshman year at Penn State and was one of the leading hitters in the Big Ten in 2009,” said manager Mike Orchard. “We are looking forward to him being a team leader for us in 2010.”

Eberle, a 6-foot, 196-pound sophomore, from Chattanooga, Tenn. plays third base for the Jacksonville State Gamecocks. As a freshman, Eberle hit .305 and led the team in home runs (11). He was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American team in 2009. Eberle is currently leading the team in home runs (5) and tied for second in RBI (19).

“Sam had a great freshman season in 2009 and we are excited to see his power continue in 2010,” Orchard said. “Sam has the ability to hit a home run every time he comes up to bat and we look forward to having that power in Mankato this summer.”
